Photography is a discipline in its own right, with its own history, techniques, and technical language. At the same time, it sits at the very foundation of television and film production. Every moving image is made up of individual photographic frames, recorded in sequence. The principles that govern still photography therefore also govern how cameras behave in television studios, on location, and on film sets.
Understanding photography is not about learning to take better pictures alone. It is about understanding how cameras interpret light, how lenses shape images, how exposure decisions affect detail, and how visual choices influence what an audience perceives. These fundamentals remain constant whether the camera records a single still image or thousands of frames per minute.
Many practitioners enter television and film through photography, often without realising how much of their photographic knowledge already applies. Concepts such as exposure, depth of field, focal length, colour temperature, and lighting control are shared across all forms of image-making. The difference lies not in the physics, but in how decisions must be sustained over time, across shots, and sometimes across multiple cameras.
This photography learning series is designed to make those foundations explicit. Each module focuses on a single core concept, explained from first principles, without assuming prior technical knowledge. The material is written to be accessible to newcomers while remaining relevant to experienced photographers, camera operators, and filmmakers who wish to deepen their understanding.
The modules stand on their own and can be read in any order, but together they form a structured pathway into the visual and technical language used throughout television and film production. Where appropriate, links are made to related learning material elsewhere on the site.
Photography Learning Modules
- Photography: Foundations — Light, Cameras, and Image Formation
- Exposure: How Light Is Recorded
- Depth of Field: Optical Principles and Visual Consequences
Additional modules will be added over time as the series develops.
